After I started Method 360, those sneakers got used and used, but still I did not find myself ready to invest in a new pair. In fact, I worked out in an old t-shirt and sweats or even at times in my work clothes! Working out was still was not a priority; at times it was squeezed in between work, and I only went because I had already paid. So I wore what I wore.
As I got more fit, my clothes got bigger and my sneakers got older. I can remember working out with Trish at Mill Run Park in a blazer and a pair of baggy work pants held closed with a pin. I had lost a ton of weight and they were huge. I lost the blazer first and could barely keep the pants on for the workout, but I still had the garage sale sneakers.
When Trish started offering classes at CNY Gymnastics Centre, I still had those old sneakers! A few months in, I decided this was the time finally and bought a pair of Nike sneakers and a couple of workout pants and shirts. Trish noticed the new sneakers immediately and made some sort of funny comment about them.
Well two years have passed and I am now on my third pair of store-bought, meant-for-working-out sneakers, but that first pair of store-bought Nikes still exists. I brought them to the studio because I needed an extra pair as back up when I forgot to carry my current ones in!
Fast forward to February, 2014. I brought a friend to a trial class, and like me, she had not made working out a priority as of late. She showed up in a pair of purple Converse sneakers! Knowing what she was in for in a Method 360 class, I told her that those purple Converse would not work, but she said that was all that she had! Then I remembered my back up gym sneakers. They were there, and she was about my size, so she wore them!
She joined Method 360 and wore my sneakers for the next several classes! I would come in at 5:30 in the morning and see them next to my new ones all stretched out, as they were really to small for her. Like, me she was not ready to invest in fitness, in herself.
When I saw my first pair of store-bought sneakers sitting there next to my new ones all stretched out and sad, they reminded me of my old garage sale pair. A few weeks later, my friend bought an auto-renew contract and bought her own pair of sneakers. My first real pair still sits there waiting! I use them when I wear my new ones home by accident or when my daughter joins me at a class and leaves hers at school. The torch has been passed yet again! My daughter hopes to become more serious about fitness and soon her sneakers will join mine, my friend’s and my first pair of store-bought Nikes on the mat.
