I wanted to expand my exercise and looked into senior activities at the Y. What I saw was too sedentary for me. I told my daughter Emily that I was too young to be a senior - physically or mentally!
Emily had been going to Method 360 for a while and treated me to a 2-class trial to a new class called "Method Lite" because it would be good for me "to see what else was out there." She said I was "too old for kick-ass and to young for sitting on a chair lifting soup cans." She is right!
Method Lite was developed by Kristen for people like me. After trying it, I don't think I want to take an exercise class anywhere else!
According to Emily, "the individual is important at Method 360, it's not competitive, and a positive attitude toward oneself and life is the focus."
The signs and boards everywhere, including the bathroom, reinforce this philosophy. Also, I can see a difference in Emily since she's been taking classes. She has met wonderful, positive people and is committed to her exercise. The staff are real people who know that life can be messy and a positive physical and mental attitude can see you through the "messy" days.
She demonstrated the "inch worm", once. Well, I felt more like a "1/4 inch worm". She caught me rolling my eyes as I was thinking, "Right - I could never do that."
[Ha! BIG mistake. Don't roll your eyes in front of Kristen!!]
I don't have the flexibility but she let me know that whatever flexibility I had was fine. This has been her message all along - do the best you can with what you have and where you are. I accept that I have strong points and not-so-strong points, such as not relaxing my shoulders, not using my legs to full advantage because I "knee jerk" to my arms and shoulders, and my ever-present problem of not sticking my butt out enough (which I find funny now). Kristen doesn't miss anything!
Sometimes when the exercises are hard (and I'm already sore) I get discouraged, but I keep going on. A person with no exercise program and no history of one can succeed in Method Lite because Kristen is an excellent role model and a gentle, encouraging, (and funny) instructor.
And...she'd like to add that Method can infect everyone in your family! This summer, when Emily and Brian put the pool up, "I was watching the boys jumping off the ladder, doing their version of a complete circle before hitting the water. Every time they jumped they called, 'Method 360'!!"
