A lot of Method 360 clients want abs. It’s natural to say, "I want to look like that". As much as we hear at Method 360 that training is not about aesthetics, it is difficult to re-program decades of programming and keep out the daily bombardment of “Get Abs By Monday”, an actual headline on a cover of a ‘fitness’ magazine.
But honestly, my goal to get poppin’ abs is really getting me down.
After taking notice, I saw a pattern around a particular goal: my poppin’ abs goal. It always made me feel bad about myself. After a few months of observing my anxiety, I had a chat with myself. As you read this maybe it gets you thinking, gets you curious about what a goal setting meeting with Jess could do for you, or gets you to just have a good chat with yourself.
Well it’s not. It makes me feel bad. Really. Really. REALLY bad. And I know I’m not there yet and I’ve been working and I feel the abs under my protective dough layer…...
Well wait just a minute. You can feel abs so you must have abs.
Ah, well, yes. I guess I must have abs.
Isn’t the goal to have abs? And you have abs?
Well, the goal is really to see the abs. Like that fitness woman in the catalog. Not the ‘always have a six pack abs’ but the ‘when you move you see the abs’ kind of abs. Poppin’ abs.
You can see some abs!!! Hello?!?! The rib ab is, poppin’, as you would say.
Well that doesn’t count. There’s a bone there and…….
Uh the point is you are starting to see an ab, correct?
Well, yes. I do work hard in class and am back on my diet plan which is really hard for me and……………………..
Sorta. I mean I just feel like I will NEVER get there.
So what if today when you walked by the mirror the abs have popped?
I give the little Pillsbury man a high five!!!
Did what exactly?
I did enough work to be strong enough to have abs and now I can go do anything like the fitness woman having fun in the catalog.
So seeing abs means you can go do anything and have fun?
No, of course not. It’s more like a badge of honor that everyone can see. See my poppin’ abs? I’m a fit girl!
So people who don’t look a certain way aren’t fit?
Perhaps your real goal isn’t poppin’ abs. Being fit enough to go do things has nothing to do with you seeing abs. It has more to do with going out and doing the activity. When have you put your Method training to the test and gone out and had fun with a physical activity?
Exactly. So perhaps is your goal is less about poppin’ abs and more about getting out and rock climbing, kayaking, hiking, surfing……
Ok, ok. What if we revise the goal of “poppin’ abs” to say my goal is to try one new physical activity every quarter and use my abs instead of looking at them.
This feels little better. Yes?
I agree. But I’m still going to high five that Dough Boy when I get my poppin’ abs.
The great thing about Method 360 is that we have a resource to help us.
So if you need help with goals or you don’t want to look like a crazy person
talking to yourself and high fiving the Dough Boy,
Jess Ryan is a great resource who can give you another perspective.
Sometime another perspective is all you need to get you on your way
to some poppin’ goals.
