What she said: “Your body loves resistance. It really responds quickly to strength-training.”
What I heard: “Do strength training. Only do strength training. Your body wants it. Your body needs it. ”
For 2 years this is what I did and spent most of that time trying to figure out why if I’m doing what my body wants, what it likes, it refuses to change.
Who’s fault is this? Why doesn’t the Method I have invested my life into work for me?
Obviously, I was not paying attention to a key idea that Method spouts daily.
- Change it up.
- Do not get comfortable.
- Challenge yourself.
Three years later, I awoke to this: I was too comfortable in my training. No matter what the recipe of the day was on the workout floor, I kept only strength training. I abused the freedom of Method 360. I used the permission given to “Make this workout your own” against myself!
Who’s fault it this? Come on. You know the answer.
SO, I got uncomfortable. I changed my training, upping my cardio & slogging through truly uncomfortable workouts. For my body, that uptick changed my body composition, my lung capacity, & taught me that I wasn’t really working as hard as I thought I was.
Great news, Jen. So what?
Well here’s the newest thing. The strangest thing. I now itch for cardio.
Who am I?
Last week was Strength Week at Method 360 and it was uncomfortable. Before April, I would’ve LOVED last week’s classes: entire classes without one ounce of cardio? YES, PLEASE!!!
So last week, when there was almost no cardio in the traditional sense, I was terrified for a minute. Why? I’m terrified of fat. I’m terrified of getting fat.
Based on what I heard our clients talking about, I know I’m not alone.
Y’all who are in the same boat as me wanted to scratch that itch, too. You wanted to feel the burn because it puts you in your fat burning zone. You believed that one week of pure strength training would undo all the hard work you’ve put in.
Let’s not forget the other side of the room: remember Endurance Week & Fast Twitch week? Those of you who respond better to high resistance were miserable! You were terrified that a week of working endurance or fast twitch would send you back to Fatville.
I was sweaty, challenged, & frankly VERY sore immediately after class.
I built strength, muscle that will make me lean, fighting fat all day every day.
What the frig was I so worried about? How did I forget that my body is now expecting the cardio!
That itch? That’s a pattern I need to be vigilant of. The minute my body expects it is the minute I need to change it up.
Method 360 training is not one size fits all. Do you have permission to make it your own? Of course. You always do.
But check yourself: I know I had to. On Friday, I asked myself, “Am I going to dose in cardio here because it’s easier?” Frankly, yes, it was easier. It was easier mentally and physically that day. I would’ve scratched the itch, just like my body and brain wanted me to.
Are you terrified of messing with the good thing you have going now? And if the answer is yes, that’s something to examine.
What’s the truth? The truth is that there is no easy answer, and there is no static, consistent workout you can do that will keep getting you results.
If you fail to change it up, if you always scratch the itch, you’ve got yourself a pattern. Sometimes you need to trust your trainer to challenge you to push you away from the comfort and move you beyond your limiting patterns if you want to keep achieving.
