Am I in the mood for cardio or resistance? It doesn’t matter. I need to do the thing my body needs, and my body needs cardio because I hate it so much. I looked over at Ben, who chose the resistance, and was shocked! He said, “I could do cardio all day! This (nodding to the Bosu) is the stuff my body needs.”
I was absolutely tickled. He gets it! It was the perfect Method Moment: when you’re not backing away because it’s hard – the “you must do the thing you think you cannot do” moment of the workout! This mental shift is an integral part of what makes Method 360 a viable, sustainable workout that challenges me, in real life, to make choices that push me out of the comfort zone, where real change happens.
Yesterday I was sent this article about fitness fads & trends over the years. It was a lovely trip down memory lane for me: I have gleefully over-indulged in step classes, slide classes, spin classes, Zumba, cardio kickboxing. And the videos I bought!! Tae Bo, P90X, Insanity…you name it, I tried (and loved) it. But as I read, I realized none of the fads changed my mind about how I approached life (or fitness); I blindly followed along, never making choices like I do in a Method 360 class. I wasn't asked to think.
The article was sent with the sentiments that Method 360 is so awesomely not a fad, so of course I read it with careful reserve and measure. “Fad”, a negative word, means that anything labeled as such is destined to lose popularity & effectiveness. I wondered if Method 360 could be a fad? Noooooooooooo!
But certainly there are people out there who may see it this way. Do you approach Method 360 like it’s a fad, in that it’s everything, you have to do it and only it, and it's a panacea for your workout woes? Are you blindly following along? Well, then yes, it’s likely to become less effective and lose popularity with you. Treat it like a fad, like it’s your only choice, like you’re doing it because it’s popular and not because it works for you (or because you enjoy it), and voila! It's a fad.
Here’s why I think Method 360 isn’t a fad: it’s more than a workout. It’s a way of thinking intelligently about your body & your fitness. Yes, you can wring the most out of your hour. You’ll sweat, work hard, build muscle, lose fat. But we ask you to bring more than your body to the floor; we ask you to make decisions based on your body. Hence, your mind is taxed during a workout!
You have to make choices, like the ones Ben & I did in class last week. You have to talk yourself off the ledge sometimes, thinking, “Oh! I’m not focused! I’m not thinking!” You have to push yourself, & this motivates others in the room. It’s not one size fits all, and it’s not for everyone, but it can change your thinking & your physical body, if you approach it with balance.
Method 360 isn’t the only aspect of your fitness, and we know that! We love hearing about your runs, your races, your yoga, your boot camps, your barre, your swimming, and your spinning. Take what you learn at Method & apply it to your other loves, your other physical endeavors. It will help you get up that hill a little faster or register for that race with a little more confidence! Notice that you hit the “easy button” with less frequency. Choose the thing you think you cannot do.
Method 360 provides sustainable, attainable fitness for your mind & body, causing a mental shift applicable everywhere in your life! Tell us your #methodmoment…we’d truly love to hear it!
