I did NOT want to go to this yoga class – or any class, for that matter. I had hip pain, couldn’t lose weight, was failing at running, and was in mental and emotional pain. All the time.
It took a Herculean effort to get there. I rolled out my mat in front of this teacher I didn't know and waited. She asked if we had injuries and what we wanted to work on. I didn't open my mouth, probably for the first time in my life, which is a good indicator of how low I was feeling.
During the opening moments of class, she told us a little about her journey: she’d found yoga because she had run too much, too far, and in pain. It had done a number on her hips.
She said she’d had to change up her approach and had found yoga to be very healing, getting her back to her old self.
Yes. I find yoga to be healing. I would like to get back to my old self.
She said she was grateful for us coming out today and knew that it was likely difficult for us to get there.
Hm. Yes. I had to get a babysitter and leave my small kiddo at home.
She said, “Whatever is going on with you, know that you’re exactly where you’re supposed to be.”
Well, jeez. How did she know I needed to hear that?
Tears of hope and relief ran down my face.
I felt like I was in the right place.
I gave fitness with Trish a shot. Nothing else had worked in healing my hips, changing my body, or connecting me to myself. Why the hell not trust my instinct? Why not trust the woman who’d said the words I’d so needed to hear…words she could not have possibly known I’d so badly needed?
In so many ways, following that trust – during low times and high times, during sludge & difficulty, during excitement and lightness – has absolutely changed my body, my brain, my outlook, my pain, and my life.
Today, I’m grateful for that November day in 2011 when I met Trish Gallen, who later became my fitness trainer, who later became my friend, who later became my business partner, who continues to grow, change, and inspire others with her vision of how fitness can be.
It can be better. It can be different. It is for your body. It will change your life.
I’m grateful for this Method.
