But, if you're like me, you are too damn overwhelmed & exhausted to do much about it successfully most weeks. Frankly, I get annoyed with myself for being so overwhelmed. I have only one kid (get a GRIP JenLiddy), an extremely tight family & friend network, & I’m one of the few people I know who is perfectly fine saying, “No, I can’t take that on right now”. But most weeks, I barely crawl over the finish line, & that pisses me off. (How are the rest of you DOING it, BTW??)
When I get truly overwhelmed, I can usually hang on to my fitness regime, as it saves my mind and body from insanity. A healthy, mindful eating plan, however, is the first thing to go out the window. Here are some thoughts from my overwhelmed brain:
- Puh-leeze! I don’t have time OR brain power to breathe, must less plan/shop/ /chop/assemble/cook.
- My body obviously craves sugar. It must need it. I’ve read Geneen Roth, and I know I need to give it what it needs. Screw you, sugar crash.
- Gluten, schmuten. Mmmmm….chewy, delicious bread, pasta, soft pretzels. You are my best friends. Thank you for the comfort.
- I. Just. Cannot. Please don’t tell me I need five veggies in my daily diet. Ima cut you.
- Overly complicated & expensive weekly meal plans.
- No. More. Sugar. No. More. Gluten.
- Green smoothies (have I ever mentioned how much I loathe green smothies?)
Who can live like this? It’s not realistic, enjoyable, or (for me) sustainable. I feel defeated, angry at food, and swing back into resentful, mindless, “I’m going to eat whatever I want” behavior.
Successful, healthy eating for me involves mindfulness, and I always need help with this. One of our clients, Lisa Yarah, is a nutritionist in Fayetteville who recently launched her own business, CNY Dietitians. She offered to meet with me to help me get back on track and find some foods that will serve me well.
Lisa met me at her home office, & the first thing she wanted to know was what brought me to her. What was I struggling with? Like many of our Method 360 clients, I am already well versed in what good nutrition looks like. I know what I should be eating. What I needed from Lisa was not a primer in how many fruits & veggies to eat each day; instead, I wanted guidance about food options to fit my lifestyle & help in deciphering WHY I was making mindless, unhealthy choices.
What ensued in our meeting was a conversation in which I discovered that I eat mindlessly while working & driving. We discussed my daily eating patterns & examined the exact kinds of foods I like and the way I eat each day. For example, when I told her that it felt impossible to take the time to heat up food for lunch at work, she didn’t laugh, roll her eyes, or kick me out of the house. Instead, she immediately came up with four or five options that would work instead.
We did get technical, though. Lisa weighed me in order to determine how much protein I’d need each day, and we discussed how to achieve that goal with foods I like & am willing to prepare. She gave me samples of better-for-me protein bars and, and her food props helped me understand exactly what a portion of food should look like.
Lisa suggested I log my food intake using MyFitnessPal (a task I loathe but was willing to participate in), and in the next two weeks, she followed up with me several times, checking in. The logging was helpful, and I really found I’m challenged to get protein and still prefer carbohydrates. I became more mindful about my choices and made some changes immediately that helped me eat better at work.
At our follow-up meeting two weeks later, we reviewed the challenges I’d had over the previous two weeks and again she offered some specific strategies to meet my needs. There was a small change on the scale, which thrilled me, but I came to her looking more for mental peace surrounding my relationship with food rather than a physical change on the scale.
Regardless of whether you’re just beginning your healthy eating journey, you need a tweak to your current eating plan, or you want a complete overhaul, I can highly recommend Lisa Yarah to you. Her knowledge and interactive approach made me feel comfortable, hopeful, and empowered.
Gift yourself with some self-care and get prepared for the long holiday season ahead. Lisa works with our new Catalyst Flex clients and those who choose Enhanced Body Composition Assessments, and she works out here too! She knows what Method 360 can do for your body, but she also knows how crappy nutrition can undermine it all!
