Since 1994, running was my primary fitness, and what I loved most was the company of my running group. Despite working hard after the surgery, I couldn’t get back to the level of fitness necessary to keep up with the group. I was sad to lose those special bonds I formed with my running friends, and I became lonely and depressed.
I tried Body Pump for a while, but was always irritated that the instructor worked out with us and never seemed to pay attention to anyone’s form. One day, as I was doing skull crushers, I experienced an incredibly angry feeling: not just at-the-moment angry, but angry with life in general. Suddenly my back wrenched with horrible pain and completely seized up.
The instructor barely gave me a glance. When I hobbled down to the lobby and out to my car, none of the staff seemed to care either. I knew then I needed something different.
I realized I was using my workouts to punish myself and numb my emotional pain. My back rehab was slow, and I felt more depressed than ever. In winter 2014, I became suicidal. I truly believed my husband and daughters would be better off without me. With the help of therapy and medication, I improved my mental health but was still out of shape and physically worn down.
Fellow client Kris Baker, a long-time friend and running partner, had been urging me to try Method for months and I finally agreed.
I had been doing sun salutations every morning but couldn’t even hold plank for FIVE seconds! I had done various forms of exercise over the years, including aerobics and Reebok step, which I taught in college. (Yes, I’m that old!) But I found Method 360 to be different than anything I’d ever tried.
I remember repeatedly thinking “There’s no way I can do that!” every time a class circuit was explained. The Bosu terrified me. The ropes felt like concrete. One day the warmup included plank up-downs and my brain was like “NFW”.
Kristen came over and said “you can do it, just try”. And I shocked myself! I actually could do a few, which gave me confidence to try other intimidating exercises. After every class I felt like someone had mopped the floor with me, but I started to love it.
Inspired by the motivational chatter (which was completely in line with my own training as a life coach), I became the Method Goals Coach, driven to help reinforce and dive deeper into the positive messages and ideas being shared during class.
Method has helped me in countless ways. At the top is the outstanding fitness education they provide. Being a hard-core runner, I never wanted to nor felt like I had to do any other form of exercise. It didn’t occur to me that my many injuries resulted from exercising in a single plane of motion every day!
Method taught me the necessity of a strong core (and that doesn’t mean washboard abs). I’ve learned about periodization - that if I don’t mix it up, my body will adapt and get bored, plateauing my results.
Method also changed my mindset. For so long I was frustrated with my dead metabolism, questioning if I needed to come to terms with the fact that my body just wasn’t going to change. Complaining to Leslie and Kristen one day, they reminded me that if I want to see it, first I have to believe it.
Method hooked me up with a killer nutritionist, who over the course of a year helped me re-ignite my metabolism pilot light, improve my depression far more than anything I’d ever tried, and finally reshape my body.
Most importantly, Method has reinforced that I am resilient. I’ve bounced back from a lot of things – severe post-partum depression, anxiety, progressive neurological disease, and an eating disorder. With what I’ve learned at Method, I know that when I take full responsibility for my body by understanding how it functions and modifying workouts to suit my goals, I’m unstoppable!
If you’re reading this success story as someone considering trying out Method 360, get your butt in here! I’ve known owners Jen and Leslie for years, and they are truly two of my favorite people in the world. Owner Trish brings undeniable knowledge and fierce passion for busting the myths around fitness and sharing the science of what really works. The coaches are motivating, relatable, knowledgeable, and fun. And the community here is incredibly down to earth, non-judgmental, and welcoming. For a while I thought I had to settle for a depressing life trapped in a body that didn’t feel like my own. Method helped me reach my goals and they’ll help you too!
ps – With my increased confidence from Method, my true passion is blossoming into a thriving business. I’m no longer doing Goals Coaching (don’t worry, Leslie is there for you!), but am now devoting my time and energy to supporting moms and dads in the harrowing and exhausting challenge of parenting. www.jessryan.com
