Life Coaching With a Side of Cheese
· the cheesy car-salesman type who has the secret to solving every problem in your life (for only $999.99!!!).
· the condescending cold fish who’s got life all figured out & will tell you what to do with your life so you can be as put-together and perfect as her.
· the pumped-up drill sergeant who screams at you to suck it up and hit your goals but doesn’t bother to give you any idea of how.
· The earthy, floo-flam whose advice is that if you relax and forget about DOING anything, simply be one with spirit, and listen for your answers in the wind, your entire life will sort itself out on its own.
What the @$#! is a life coach, really? After all, no licensing is required. Anyone can hang a shingle and call themselves a life coach.
I’m Jess Ryan, and I’m so excited to provide life coaching to the clients of Method 360! I was trained and certified by Oprah’s Dr. Martha Beck and also the Creative Grief Studio, and I’m proud of that.
But does it really matter?
Shingle or no shingle, it won’t be long before people find out whether or not a life coach is good at what they’re claiming to do, or just a cheesy fraud.
A bit later I’ll share my own ideas of what a life coach does, but first let’s hear from a couple of real-life Method folks!
What hesitations did you have about working with a life coach?
Brandon: “I didn't think I would get much from a life coaching session, period.”
Mary: “I wasn’t sure what to anticipate at all. I didn’t really know what a ‘life coach’ was or how a person became one. I’m a pretty self-aware person, so I wasn’t sure what was to gain from talking to a stranger. However, I was perfectly willing to give it a try, and truly, it was a great experience.”
What was your session with Jess like?
Brandon: “The time with Jess can be used in any way... she will let you drive the conversation where you want it to go. Nothing about her session should feel intimidating.”
Mary: “Jess used the word ‘organic’ to describe how she works with people, and that was such an accurate description. She is not at all prescriptive, and has no “one size fits all” solution, which would be unrealistic and ineffective. Instead, she asked me questions to gain a better understanding of the way I think and the types of strategies that would work well with me. I never felt any pressure to share anything I didn’t want to. It didn’t feel like an interview (question-answer), but rather, a natural conversation.”
What did you enjoy most about your session with Jess?
Brandon: “I most appreciated Jess's passion and enthusiasm for relating to my specific challenges as they relate to my goals.”
Mary: “I felt free to tell her anything, knowing that she did not have any preconceived notions about me, any bias, or any ulterior motives. It was refreshing to share my experiences and struggles with her. She has a gentle, empathetic presence, but posed ideas and questions that challenged me to consider new ideas and approaches for my life.”
What did you get out of it?
Brandon: “There was enough conversation to have some good take-aways but not so much that it was difficult to digest. Almost a month later, I can say that from using the few tactics we discussed, the benefits promised have absolutely been delivered. I learned to be more curious when my strategies become flawed or challenged, and Jess gave me some specific tactics to use with my already existing strategies.”
Mary: “Jess gave me concrete ideas of steps to take for me to meet my goals. I have already been thinking and writing about the ideas Jess gave me, and it has given me a sense of purpose and optimism for the trajectory of my life. I knew some of my goals and some of the changes I wanted to see in my life, but I didn’t know how to get there. Jess was very helpful in providing some strategies based on my particular personality.”
Is Jess good at burpees?
As promised, here’s what I think a good life coach does:
- Asks you interesting, thought-provoking, and sometimes difficult questions
- Offers you different perspectives on your situation
- Gives you genuine emotional support and the chance to really be listened to
- Is empathetic, but holds you accountable
- Keeps everything confidential
- Is totally non-judgmental and does not impose personal values & beliefs
- Provides you with real, practical tools & strategies based on your personality, your strengths, and your situation
- Teaches you to listen to your own intuition and live according to your values
- Empowers you to be your own life coach
- Most importantly, is authentic (not a cheesy douche)
You can always count on me to bring my best to every session, and you’ll always get the real me. The imperfect, goofy, been-through-loads-of-crap, me.
I definitely don’t have life all figured out, but I’m confident in my skills and experience, and I love being a life coach! I just hate the cheesy title.
Mary: “The thing I most appreciated about Jess was her authenticity. She was unpretentious and real – a human being talking with another human being, not claiming to have mastered how to live life, but simply offering empathy, perspective, and ideas.”
