Where was this training when I was playing football?! by Bill Reed

Our November Success Story comes from a background where big & strong is preferred. College football is perfect for someone 5’11”, 320 lbs., but “while effective on the football field, it’s absolutely terrible in real life!!”

Meet Bill Reed – a former athlete who became increasingly stiff & brittle in his 20 years since graduating college. Once leaving college athletics, it wasn’t just missing being athletic & part of a team that was troubling him.

“Once you quit playing, you are still 320 pounds with all the bad habits that come with it. I fluctuated up and down for about 10 years and finally got serious about losing weight. I dropped almost 100 pounds in a year and got down to 235.

“I met my beautiful wife Jen that same year and a new chapter of my life began. Long story short: in the next 10 years I gained it all back and hit the 300-lb. mark around 3 years ago.

“The bad habits didn’t go away, the lack of training didn’t go away, but my self-esteem and confidence certainly did. Not only did my marriage suffer but my attitude, appearance, and confidence suffered as well.

“I’m a salesperson by trade; I have to project confidence on a daily basis, and it was increasingly hard to do so. More importantly, I have two beautiful little girls that I would do anything for, and being so unhealthy was not an option anymore.”

Bill had bariatric surgery - the sleeve procedure -  and dropped 60 pounds the following year, getting down to 240. "Of course, even after surgery, the bad habits were and are still there, but the sleeve keeps me in check and has not allowed me to gain it all back like I have in the past.

"The one thing I was lacking was a consistent and productive workout routine. I know how to lift weights and do cardio, but my body started to hurt: tennis elbow, joint pain, and back trouble… I felt awful and gained about thirty pounds back over the next year - back in the 270’s."

This played out for a while until Bill's wife Jen joined Method 360 Fitness in East Syracuse.

"I’m not exaggerating when I say that it was a life changing experience for her and unknowingly at the time, for me…She HARRASSED me for a few months to try a class with her but I refused.

"Jen is VERY persistent!!! I was really worried that my body could not handle the workout and that all the aches and pains would not allow me to get it done.

"My first class was an interval class, and it was really hard. I got a little light headed a few times but I made it!!!"

This is where Bill's new chapter begins: "I make 2-3 classes every week (need to do 4) and have fallen in love with the culture and the workouts. It’s where I need to be.

"The trainers guiding you through class, correcting your form, and motivating you is priceless. The culture is the main difference: I have heard it described as a cult, and in the very best sense of the word, I have to agree…I feel the changes both physically and mentally, and that’s exciting.

"I’m down to 254 but more importantly, I am already much more flexible/mobile and can see some changes in my body. I will know exactly how much when I do my second assessment with Kristen in December."

Bill says that Method 360 has helped him believe that “I can be athletic again – I have the confidence that my body can actually handle being athletic again!

“If you make time to work out, if you make it one of your top priorities, I guarantee things will become clearer, life will get better… This is not bullshit. I’m living proof… I want the people in my life to live happy and fruitful lives; this is the path that gives you the best chance to do so!”

What happens when you're sick of your own bullshit?

Lost in her mid-20s, Caitlin was…
  • missing the physical release & aesthetic benefits of being part of a sports team.
  • suffering with anxiety or medical issues, combating mental stories.
  • dealing with disordered eating & over-exercising, unable to get where she wanted to go.

Skinny, but miserable. "At the peak of my disordered eating and overexercising, resulting in the smallest I’ve ever been. This lasted for about 4 months before I couldn’t take the hunger and injuries from under-fueled hours of cardio. November 2011"

For a long time Caitlin, “ignored the elephant in the room that I was beginning to resemble with excuses like, ‘I’m just a solid person’; ‘My mom’s family is bigger boned’, etc. Barely fitting into the biggest sizes at the stores my friends shopped in, I reassured myself I wasn’t really that out of shape.”
 
Something had to change. First she broke a bone that put her out of commission physically. Then she became sick of her own bullshit.
 
Granted, her broken bone was legit, but “the years leading up it were full of excuses about why I hadn’t seen results, why I still looked and felt the way I did. I’d been killing myself for years and conditioned myself to have mini anxiety attacks at the thought of cardio, leaving me averse to keep going.”

Caitlin’s background in anatomy & physiology gave her just enough information to try everything herself – with no success. “I sought out Method 360 for its underpinnings in science, because I knew there was a reason nothing was working.”

“I’d never stepped foot in Method 360 before registering for my first assessment and 10 classes. Even if it was the worst mistake of my life, I only had to show up 10 times. However, I was pretty optimistic (because science, duh) and ended up hooked after my first class!

“I had no idea how bad things had really gotten until my first assessment, which gave me insight into what I needed to focus on, what exercises could supplement Method 360 workouts, and strategies to deal with those anxiety-triggers everyone faces. Trish gave me the backing I needed to talk to my doctor about the issue, and after a few months, I saw great results.”

Immediately, she learned she needed to focus on a particular split between cardio and resistance during classes. Caitlin loved that she was not only presented with modifications and options for each exercise, but “I actually felt okay in being the only person doing jumping jacks instead of mountain climbers. Everyone there is just doin’ their own thing, for themselves.”

What sets Method 360 apart from other workouts, in Caitlin’s opinion, is its level of personalization. “In my case, I’m paralyzed with fear when I feel not in control of when I can or can’t stop. It is GREAT to hear the trainers reminding everyone that if something isn’t working or you really have nothing left to give, let the movement go.”

E’ryone loves a great physical transformation story, but we ALSO love a great mental shift!  Caitlin has experienced a huge change in the narrative of her mind: “The first few weeks of classes I didn’t believe that the trainers talking would change the way I thought about exercise. After all, I’d been active for most of my life and in those twenty-odd years, nothing had ever changed: the gym was torture, I’d never be strong enough to do certain exercises, etc.

“But in my nine months at Method 360 I’ve come to recognize what I once thought was bullshit is actually the opposite, and the way I used to look at fitness was the real bullshit.
 
“I’ve put my foot down about taking on responsibilities if they don’t leave me one hour for myself. If I can’t get an hour of time — at the crack of dawn or in a frenzied rush after work — then my day needs to be reevaluated.”
 
Caitlin hopes you will consider this truth: “Just last year I would’ve scoffed and rolled my eyes at the ‘one little hour’ necessity, but I promise that you can see it that way too!”
 
And…you deserve it. Your one hour. You really do.
 
Caitlin warns: “Ultimately, no one can make you genuinely want something. You have to want to change and you have to decide to commit. At first it may very damn well seem like sacrifice. Have patience and faith in the Method 360 process to know that it’s actually the best thing you could give yourself.”
