Mike Smith has had 2 knee replacements, 2 hernia surgeries, & 7 arthroscopic surgeries.
His nephew Brandon, a Method 360 Fitness trainer, knew Mike could benefit from training at Method 360 & encouraged him to check it out, but Mike had serious doubts that he would be able to do the workouts.
Intrigued, Mike showed up for our Open House in April 2014 & the rest of the story is the absolute definition of a Success Story!
Brandon introduced Mike and his son to Trish, who was “very interested in finding out why we were there and what we wanted long term.” Mike told Trish he'd become less active because of his physical abilities in 2012. “After two of my last three surgeries, I decided to strengthen my stability, physically & mentally," and he wanted to how to strengthen his legs & build the muscles around his knees. “I told her that I had recently had both knees replaced and would not like to have to do that again in this life. So Trish introduced me to Kristen Griffin, Head Trainer.
Mike looked at his son, who noticed that the other gyms he’s been in gave a different vibe, and thought maybe this was actually something to check out, “so I took a single half hour session with Kristen and off we went.” Mike never expected to come back for a second time. He never expected to come back.
"One session with Kristen led me to rethink what I was previously told. I took more personal training sessions because it triggered a feeling of accomplishment. After having your knees cut out, learning how to walk without having to figure out which leg you’re dragging for that day is actually quite nice. Working with Kristen & learning so much about my legs and the little stabs she took at the other issues with my body makes me wish I found M360 sooner.”
“My future will be about learning how to know my limits and how to overcome the uncomfortable. I was told that I would never run and should never jump again in this life, but to think that I would be able to jump around on a trampoline and achieve lift off from a standing point never entered my mind. It is just one more of those things that the doctors don’t tell you. It’s something you need to figure out on your own.
“I do know I won’t run or jump on hard surfaces because of my knee replacements, but there will always be those things that I will do because M360 showed me that it’s ok to do something and stop a half second into trying it, if it hurts you. That’s alright, but to stop something because it is uncomfortable or you feel silly it is not alright. So to fail at something is ok, but to stop trying is not ok. Get your wits about you and hit it harder until you don’t fail, then find something else you can fail at and overcome that. Method 360 works if you work. It’s not a gym you work out in; it’s a gym you learn how to work out in.
Someone who thought he'd never come back after his first session, Mike has been a loyal and dedicated client who improves himself each week. His dedication to his fitness and wellness is evidenced by his recent commitment to a yearly membership! Bravo, Mike! We're thrilled you're part of our Method community!
How have you have most improved since starting at Method 360 Fitness?
To quote the trainers at M360: “Get out of your comfort zone”. There are many ways of being in shape, & I’d say the mind is the key. See to that & your battles will become easier to win. I have had seven arthroscopic surgeries, both knees replaced and two hernias stitched up. I never thought I’d be working out in classes with up to 50 people at times. What a rush! Since I’ve been going here I would have to say that I have improved upon my stability, strengthened my core, & increased my cardiovascular ability.
How would you describe Method 360 to someone?
Method 360 is like a guideline for how to achieve fitness with some help and support. You get the directions and you go from there. Like Mapquest, you get more than one way to go from point A to point B. Some of us are able to do things that others can’t, and then again we are unable to do what they’re capable of doing. You need to figure that out and find the route that brings you to that same end point. Listening to each of the owners and the trainers, you get this.
How is Method 360 different from other things you have tried?
I haven’t tried anything of this sort before; I’ve always been active and worked hard so I was never concerned about staying in shape, but after gaining weight from the surgeries and not being able to shed it as easy as I have in the past, I needed to find something to help me. All the trainers that I’ve worked with and worked out with have all added to my desire to keep coming back and learning more how to improve my body and cognitive state.
I also have to give credit to all the people who show up at the classes and work their tails off and run circles around me for that motivation to keep me going. I have always been one of those people if you told them you couldn’t do something you found the way to do it and being short you hear that a lot. I have built the muscles up in my legs and in my arms, which I wanted to do from the start of this adventure and will continue to do. I don’t need to look like a weight lifting guru or have that six-pack like a 22-year-old to be physically fit.
Thank you Mike for sharing your story with us! We are impressed on a daily basis with your drive and determination and can’t wait to see where 2015 takes you!
