“Method focuses on the people, the exercise and not on the equipment. And that's a relief. I'm not a gym rat and if half your exercise time is spent fiddling with equipment settings you're not going to get a great workout. Also it is not exclusively an aerobics class or only a weight training class; it’s a balance between both, where you are moving quickly between each to improve cardio, burn fat, and build muscle.
“I'm a firm believer that the recipe for motivation is autonomy, mastery and purpose. If what you are doing is something you have control over, see results and meets a greater goal for yourself, you will continue doing it. Method 360 provides options in the exercises that may not be obvious to you. You have choice to meet the fitness goal at each stage of the class. Initially my success was getting through a class without feeling like I was going to throw up. Then, without feeling dizzy. I'm pretty competitive so I wasn't going to let a class beat me. In sticking with it I started to see the results I needed: running was becoming easier and the recovery shorter. The exercises we did in Method 360 were building up my endurance and strengthening my supporting muscles.
Through taking these classes my running injuries have declined. I have some, as others do, but not the ones that an improved core can prevent. I am committed to Method 360 because of the results I have seen and look forward to seeing. It's easy to look at the alarm clock at 4:40am and say, "Not today..." but I haven't. I have yet to sign up and not go, and that is a win.
“Weight loss was never an early goal for me. I'm not overweight but I am a bit doughy. I think that an improved diet and exercise with Method 360 and running will be my next target. Method 360 partners with diet experts and others to make learning about healthy living all that much more convenient.
- We asked Mark to answer some questions to help people get a better understanding on what Method 360 is and what he has gotten out of it:
What have you learned from M360?
That it's OK to fail...but not to quit. I'm not sure if Trish has said it exactly like that, but it's a strong message for me. In the middle of say the 3rd set when the "wheels are coming off", I hear a voice in my head ask me if I am not working as hard because I physically can't because my muscles have fatigued or if I am not working as hard because I don't want to, that I'm uncomfortable. It's a question you must answer and the answer is usually "I can do one more."
What would you tell someone who is on the fence about trying M360?
Often people don't do something of this nature because they don't want to feel embarrassed. Maybe they've reached a point where they know the effort will be a struggle and they don't want to look foolish in front of others. I get that. I had never done anything like this before. I was awkward, easily fatigued, and slow. Today I'm probably still awkward but getting better; I can get through a work out without feeling dizzy and feeling energized, and actually being slow is a GOOD thing. It allows you to really focus on the movement and technique, not the number of repetitions. I'd tell people on the fence to come and try. Everybody had to start sometime and the group that's here is supportive and fun... and that includes the instructors and the participants.
What is your favorite M360 class?
I'd say Full Body. Although each has their strengths, the full body workout really gets the endorphins going too. I think people forget that working out also sharpens the mind as well as the body. The Method 360 classes definitely make me more focused and energized in my work. The human body was made to move and more and more research shows how important it is for a healthy mind.
What is your favorite Method-ism?
Early on I would have said it was Trish's motivational "Awesome-sauce!" exclamation when someone was noticeably working hard. But that one just made me laugh. Today I'd say it's her "It's your hour" comment. Subtly she reminds us that we had a choice and we chose to come to class at 5:30am. It's your hour, make it meaningful. You're here and not in bed; you had the choice, now take advantage of it.
